About This Quote

LEFTISTS EAT THEIR CHILDREN: The poets, artists, and radicals are murdered first once the "revolution" actually comes about. This quote is short but it packs quite the punch. It is a classic that gets used all of the time by people who are trying to express their outrage over a horrific event that happened in a country. This is a phrase that comes from a famous book called “The Camp of the Saints” written by Saint-Exupery in 1938. In the book, the main character named Père Castor is bringing his family from France to a new land called America where they will be better off and be able to live happily ever after.

However, as they make their journey across the seas, they encounter hordes of desperate people who have been driven from their homes by war and famine. Most of these people are not welcomed by the native Americans and they are forced to live in squalor on reservations away from civilization. Despite their conditions these people can be described as happy because they have not lost hope that life will turn out OK for them.

Père Castor wonders whether this land will be better than France but he does not know what awaits him for his family when they arrive. When the family finally arrives at their destination, there is nothing there for them except death or slavery as Père Castor learns as his wife and children start to fall ill. As Père Castor’s family dies from starvation, he himself nearly goes mad from the pain of watching his loved ones slowly fade away before his eyes.

Finally, one day he realizes that he has eaten his own children and realizes that there is no hope here and decides to run back across the ocean and take his family back to France to die at home with dignity. The quote above was written by Saint-Exupery’s friend who was inspired by this book and ultimately changed it to make it more optimistic about what would happen if the world turned communist (I know this example doesn’t make much sense).
